European and Italian Liberals close ranks ahead of regional elections

eldr, Friday 12 March 2010 18:01 ::

Prior to the ELDR Council meeting in Rome, ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP pledged support to Italian Liberals ahead of the regional elections at the end of March.

Together with Antonio di Pietro MP, President of ELDR member party, Italia dei Valori and ELDR Vice President Leoluca Orlando MP, President Neyts-Uyttebroeck gave a joint press conference at the Italian Parliament addressing the disputed changes to the Italian electoral laws enacted by the Italian Government.

Orlando opened the press conference by saying that if Italy had not already been a member of the European Union, it would be doubtful whether the Union would accept the country as a member now. The battle for freedom in Italy needs strong European supporters.

ELDR President Neyts-Uyttebroeck underlined that European Liberals are honored to have Italia dei Valori as one of its Italian member parties; exemplifying a political party  of integrity and high quality politics. Di Pietro added "ELDR as the common house of European Liberals is the political home for us in terms of common convictions and a strong support for the cause of political freedoms in Italy" He also emphasized the support of Italia dei Valori to Emma Bonino of ELDR's other Italian member I Radicali Italiani to become President of the Lazio Region in the regional elections.
