ELDR-HSLS Joint Conference on Croatian Regional Restructuring - Towards EU Membership

Du 14/05/2010 00:00 au 14/05/2010 - 00:00

The main goal of the Conference is to gather a team of liberal experts from Croatia and EU countries with experience in regional and local government reform, Croatia have to implement as a part of the Country's EU accession process pursuant to the European Charter of Local Self-Government, as legislated by the Council of Europe and ratified by the Parliament of Croatia.

Since the beginning of its participation in the Government, HSLS has been insisting on a reform of local administration, restructuring and reducing the number of municipalities, cities and counties (Croatia has 21 counties, 127 cities and 429 municipalities). Many of these units exist for their own sake, they cannot be financed from their own income and they do not offer services to citizens despite the legal obligation.

The global economic crisis, whose serious consequences Croatia is facing, has encouraged a decisive and urgent reform as well as painful and necessary cuts in the state and local administration in order to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

ELDR-HSLS Joint Conference will begin on May 14th (Friday) at 10,00. and will be divided in two sessions.
The conference will start with with an introduction and a presentation of the Conference Programme followed by greeting speeches of the guests: Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, Mrs. Djurdja Adlesic - Vice Prime Minister, Mrs. Annemie Neyts MEP and ELDR President, Mr. Jelko Kacin MEP, Mr. Ivo Vajgl MEP, Mrs. Irma Pavlinic Krebs - Slovenian Minister for Public Administration, Davorin Mlakar - Croatian Minister for Public Administration, representative of FNSt).
After introductory speeches, HSLS President, Mr. Darinko Kosor will give a briefing on HSLS views on structural reforms of local government and local self-government in Croatia. This session will be open to the media.

After the coffee break, the Conference will continue with Experts Session with key-note speakers from Croatia (3), Slovenia (2), Germany (1) and Danmark (1).

During the coffee break, HSLS will organize a press conference with following participants: Darinko Kosor, Anemie Neyts, Djurdja Adlesic, Irma Pavlinić Krebs, Mr. Kacin and Mr. Vajgl.
