European Liberals shape their policies on demographic change
What’s the issue? Demographic change will take effect in the next five to ten years and requires us to look now at how Europe can maintain a workforce that can innovate, create and ensure long-term economic growth and competitiveness on the global stage.
The ELDR Party has launched a Focus Year on demographic change with a special website that aims to highlight the main talking points, what’s at stake and what our liberal democrat positions are.
Who are the players? Contributors to the discussions on the Focus Year website include the liberal European Commissioners: Cecilia Malmström (Home Affairs) Olli Rehn (Economic and Monetary Affairs), and Androula Vassiliou (Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth); Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP, ELDR President, and Leoluca Orlando MP, ELDR Vice President; and Barbro Westerholm MP. They are just some of the many active politicians committed to tackling this issue.
What are the latest talking points? Below are some of the many proposals put forward this week on the Focus Year website:
- Setting appropriate conditions for older workers to remain active in the labour market for longer;
- Making the most of labour immigration and adopting the “Blue Card Directive”;
- Improving Europe’s education and training systems;
- Supporting youths in their transition to work and in their efforts to engage in our societies and helping them to study and work abroad.
Where I can find info? www.eldrfocus.eu is a platform for exchanging points of view about demographic change. It contains latest information, frequent updates and new, friendly features that help members and citizens to get quickly acquainted with European Liberal Democrat opinions.
Everybody can contribute by submitting an opinion article, commenting on the views of others and taking part in our poll, which is regularly updated.

€URonomics – Bailout or Bust?
ELDR conference on the future of the euro zone Thursday 17th June 2010 - 13.00 to 15:00 Concert Noble, rue d’Arlon 82, 1040 Brussels, Belgium
In the framework of the upcoming summit of EU leaders in June, the European liberals organise a public conference about the present situation in the euro zone, in view of the developments in Greece and other member states, to discuss our liberal views on this subject and the way forward. The speakers include ELDR Party President, Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP, Siim Kallas, European Commission Vice President (Estonia), who will present the Estonian perspective of the state of play in the euro zone in view of Estonia’s expected entry into the euro at the beginning of next year; a representative from the European Banking Federation and Olle Schmidt MEP, Coordinator of the European Parliament’s committee on the economic and financial crisis who will talk about possible measures for strengthening euro zone cooperation and the European financial supervisory framework.
“The idea behind the euro zone is to ensure European prosperity – why one has to look at the longer term effects for European financial stability, rather than applying populistic short-term behaviour. Reliable policies are not built by turncoats.” What effects would the dissolution of the euro zone have for the EU? What effects would it have for the mutual trust and cooperation between European neighbours? I believe that the longer term effects would benefit neither Europe nor Greece. It stands perfectly clear that Greece will not avoid going through a thorough domestic reconstruction process, similar to that of e.g. Ireland”, comments ELDR Party President, Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP, ahead of the conference.
The conference is open to the press who can participate in the panel discussion.
For more information about the conference and to confirm your participation please contact Robert Plummer, rplummer@eldr.eu, +32.2.237.0147. For press enquiries, please contact Chiara Puletti cpuletti@eldr.eu +32.2.237.0143.

Liberals with high leverage in the new European Commission

Following the presentation of the new college of Commissioners by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday, 27 November 2009, ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts warmly welcomed the portfolios assigned to liberals. “Eight of the Commissioners represent European Liberal Democrat values, which will ensure a liberal footprint on the agenda for change set out by Commission President Barroso in the political guidelines for the new Commission for the coming five years."
"Mr Barroso has heard the liberal message, namely that the liberal members of the Commission should obtain portfolios which allow them to play a visibly significant role in the future Commission."
Liberal Commissioners will be in charge of important portfolios such as economic and monetary affairs, trade and home affairs, and two of the liberal Commissioners are also assigned the role of Vice-President. ELDR President Neyts commented that “This enables liberals to once again be in the driving seat for ensuring both individual and economic freedoms as the backbone of development, and that is promising for the EU”. President Neyts moreover expressed satisfaction over the fact that European Liberal Democrats once again prove themselves as frontrunners in gender balance: “Four out of eight liberal Commissioners are female, and that clearly shows that we liberals not only talk about gender equality, but also practice it in reality”.
European Liberal Democrats congratulate the liberal nominees and trust that they will prove their capacities and skills in the hearings of the European Parliament that has to approve the candidates as proposed by Barroso. Together with the liberal group in the European Parliament, this Commission has the potential of being the driving force for European prosperity and integration.
Liberal Commissioner nominees and portfolios:
Siim Kallas (Vice President): Transport Neelie Kroes (Vice President): Digital agenda Máire Geoghegan Quinn: Research, science & innovation Karel De Gucht: Trade Cecilia Malmström: Home affairs Janez Potocnik: Environment Olli Rehn: Economic and monetary affairs Androulla Vassiliou: Education & culture, multilingualism and youth

ELDR kick-starts economic growth for crisis prevention
“The nomination of Herman Van Rompuy (current Belgian Prime Minister) and Baroness Catherine Ashton (current European Commissioner for Trade) as President of European Union and the High Representative of EU respectively mean the start of a new era. Nonetheless, let me express my deep disappointment because of the lack of liberals amongst the four top jobs” Annemie Neyts, President of the ELDR party said this morning at the press conference of the 30th Congress of European liberals in Barcelona. “It now depends on how many liberal commissioners there will be”, she continued. We ask the conservatives to maintain the pact: as Liberals we want to play a crucial role in the new Commission”. Neelie Kroes, Commissioner for Competition, while she expressed her concern on the choice of the EU presidency, said she was happy about the nomination of a woman as a High Representative. In such a sensitive moment, Dick Roche, Irish Minister for European Affairs said: “It is critically important that the EU focuses on the big issues such as creating sustainable jobs, providing energy security and re-establishing the link between the citizens and Europe”. ELDR is the best and really the only one able to establish a dialogue on Europe amongst citizens. We must win again the minds and hearts of people”. Talking about the theme resolution of the Congress, Annemie Neyts highlighted “that in this resolution there is a new path for sustainability and economic growth: ‘greening’ the economy, boosting investments in technology, research and creativity, and providing a functioning regulation, which aims to prevent new crises.” Artur Mas, Catalan leader of Convergencia, ELDR member said: “Never before have Catalans prepared such an international political event. On the path of the liberal thought now we have to keep increasing the welfare state, and the liberal answers are the best in Europe.” Strengthening the liberal message of the Congress, Neelie Kroes put forward the single market and the common currency as real milestones for European Liberals: “It means no borders and in the same time we maintain our cultures and our languages. If e.g. Ireland hadn’t had the Euro, the situation would have been even worse. As Commissioner for Competition, she concluded, I am the referee ensuring a fair game, making the rules clear and transparent, especially in such a hard moment. As liberals we are aware that we need to keep the market rules and fight protectionism”.

Romania: Bureau ELDR Party supports PNL candidate Crin Antonescu
The ELDR bureau, gathered in Barcelona for the annual two-day Congress, rallied yesterday unanimously behind the Romanian presidential candidate Crin Antonescu. Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck: “Romania should have a president who truly treats all parties equally and thus being a person of the State and not a man of the Party. The Romanian state, with all its institutions, needs a profound reform: eliminating political clientelism and mobilizing competent people. Neyts: “Facing the economic crisis, Crin's programme includes concrete steps in helping the economy to revitalize, keeping Romanians’ welfare as a priority. His objectives are to stimulate the creation of jobs through different packages of fiscal incentives given to SME and measures of fiscal simplification for attracting foreign investments. Neyts concluded: “The ELDR Bureau welcomes Crin Antonescu's proposal, if he were to be elected as President of Romania, to work for a strong Europe, with consolidated institutions, a Europe in which Romania will become a success story. His main project as President is the definition of Romania's role within the European Union while focusing on energetic security and Romania’s preparation to adopt the Euro.

2 + 2 = Gender equality for European Liberals is a fact
Levelling the political playing field for women is one of the foremost commitments of ELDR.
The aim of the European Liberals has always been equal opportunity ensuring for men and women the possibility to develop their talents and give a harmonious shape to politics. ELDR works so that women can represent the civil society in an equal proportion as men.
Gender equality is now more than ever a milestone for the liberals and therefore ELDR undertakes the issue to a European level with the participation of 600 delegates at the annual Congress in Barcelona for the two-day of meetings, seminars and the adoption of the theme resolution “Kick-start Europe! For a new prosperity”.
We welcome the two last nominations as European commissioner of Cecilia Malmstrom, Swedish Minister of European Affairs as well as the nomination of Geoghegan-Quinn, the Irish member of the European Court of Auditors. Compared to Socialists and Conservatives, European liberals lead the way with regard to the proportion of men and women. In our parliamentary group ALDE 45.2% of MEPs are women. Furthermore, both our EP Vice Presidents are women (Diane Wallis and Silvana Koch Mehrin) and we feature a fair gender equality in the current Commission with key Liberal Commissioners such as Neelie Kroes, Mariann Fischer-Boel, Meglena Kuneva and Androulla Vassiliou.
Just like liberals demand more successful women in business for guaranteeing a strong economy, we demand that the European Union is also committed to a representative democracy, with women participation at its highest levels.

Liberal Prime Ministers Summit – 2 EU top jobs left: “We want a Liberal”
The traditional European Liberal Summit took place today in Brussels in order to discuss a range of strategic issues before the EU summit. “We considered what role we want the head of the European Council to have – commented Annemie Neyts, ELDR Party President - and that is a chairing and coordinating function with the ability to convene additional meetings of the European Council in exceptional circumstances. One of the four top positions should go to the European liberals.”
Matti Vanhanen, Finnish Prime Minister, announced that the discussions over the candidates for the 2 EU top jobs that are set to be created after the ratification of the Lisbon treaty (President of the European Council and High representative for Foreign Affairs) have already taken place amongst the Liberal prime ministers, but “before the Lisbon treaty has been ratified, we prefer not to make it public” he added. Neyts reaffirmed, “we are not like the EPP. They have this kind of press imperialism and they always try to persuade public opinion with this constant naming of candidates deprived of a remarkable European profile. We supported Barroso’s re-nomination and now the EPP has to live up to the deal” added Neyts.
Irish Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, backed the liberal calls for having one of the remaining top jobs and stated that the Lisbon treaty ratification process must be concluded as soon as possible.
The European Council will also discuss the upcoming UN climate change conference in Copenhagen that seeks to agree a new international deal after 2012. On the Copenhagen summit, Cecilia Malmström, Swedish Minister of European Affairs and Liberal representative for the Swedish EU Presidency, said: “the financing that is available to developing countries to help them adapt to climate change is one of the main subjects on the agenda of this European Council. “The EU must make it clear that there is money on the table to help developing countries tackle climate change, but we cannot be the only ones to do so, stressed Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Danish Prime Minister. “We have to reach an agreement and move faster. Copenhagen is the deadline for an agreement…and a strong position from the EU will be essential to help achieve this” concluded Rasmussen.
Commenting on the official EU summit that is going to take place today and tomorrow, Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE group leader in the European Parliament, said: “There are two things to make this summit a success – first, a breakthrough on the Lisbon treaty ratification is essential and secondly finding an agreement concerning financial support to developing countries in view of the global climate change talks”.
