Integration or fragmentation? Future directions of EU - Russia relations
 

On Thursday 8th May 2008 the Swedish People's Party (Finland) held a successful conference about the future of EU - Russia relations under the title "Integration or fragmentation? Future directions of EU - Russia relations". The conference took place in the framework of the ELDR Political and Information Activities scheme.

Europe Day: ELDR strongly supports the Lisbon Treaty

 

 On 9th May the ELDR party wants to join in the celebrations for the 51st anniversary of the European Union and reaffirm our strong support to the Lisbon Treaty as an improvement upon the present situation at EU level.

ELDR particularly stresses that the Treaty will not replace at all the national constitutions of member states, but it will build a new European dimension, crucial to solving the big challenges of today.

UK local elections: Lib Dem record good results
 

The UK Liberal Democrats with 25% of the share of the votes succeeded to push Labour (24% share) to the third position in the local elections held on 1 May 2008 in parts of England and Wales. Collecting a good performance they will have over 4,200 council seats.

The Conservatives achieved 44%. The Liberal Democrats retained control of a number of cities including Cambridge, Liverpool and Newcastle. Liverpool was Labour’s number one target and the council composition is now Lib Dem 46, Labour 39, Liberals* 3, Greens 2 (total 90).

ELDR political activities: HSLS conference on public administration reform in Croatia
 

On Friday 25th April 2008, the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) held a successful conference on the topic of public administration reform in Croatia, in the framework of the ELDR political and information activities scheme. The conference was attended by more than 70 people who discussed this key issue as the country continues on the path to EU membership.

Participating in the conference was, among others, Durda Adlešič, HSLS President and Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister, as well as a number of state secretaries, the HSLS leadership and members, and representatives from the other ELDR Croatian member parties: Croatia People's Party - Liberal Democrats (HNS) and the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS). Mr. Ivo Sanader, Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, a coalition partner of HSLS was also present.

Three new member parties and formulating a 2009 EU campaigning strategy
 

The 54th ELDR Council Meeting, which took place on 11th April 2008 in Tallinn, Estonia, saw three new member parties join the European liberal family, the first phase of the drafting of the ELDR manifesto for the 2009 European elections and two crucial statements on the recent political and judicial developments in Turkey and in Tibet.

The programme continued on Saturday 12th April when representatives of liberal political parties from all over Europe discussed, during a crowded seminar, the techniques and communication strategies for the upcoming EU elections in the presence of Joe Hansen, member of the US Democratic Party and political consultant involved in the US presidential campaign.
